This little girl right here...I saw her moving across the white snow about five years ago. She was skittish, and I didn't know if she had a home or not. I live in a townhouse community in a wooded area that's known for people just dumping cats. She wouldn't come near me for a few months; I began putting food out on my front porch because she looked thin. A few weeks later, I would hear her meow on my front stoop around 5am. She still wouldn't let me near her but I'd put food out. I did this twice a day for a few months. One day, she appeared on my back patio. She still wouldn't allow near her so I made a small "tent" out of an old sleeping bag and placed a heating pad inside, and I'd leave food out for her. Every morning I saw her on the back patio or inside her little tent.
Fast forward into the middle of the summer, she's taken residence up on my patio and she's permitted me to pet her. She had a collar on so I called the number...the owner didn't live far away (about 150 yards) and came and got her saying, "Yeah, she's indoor and outdoor, but thanks for looking after her." I found it kind of odd that he wasn't worried as she had been at my place more often than not.
An hour later, she was on my front porch, meowing. I went to pick her up but she wasn't having any of it but instead, ran to the back patio and settled into her little tent.
A month went by, I had called her human a few times but with no answer. My siamese had to be put to sleep due to Pancreatic Cancer...the last few nights, this little black cat finally decided to come in. I was worried at first because I didn't want my Siamese to think I was betraying him. The little black floof curled up on my couch like it was her home, later, jumping up on my bed. My siamese didn't seem to mind.
A few days later, my Siamese was gone. I called the owner of the black cat one more time; he told me that he and his girlfriend had picked up to other cats and this one didn't like them...that's why she was outside so much. "You can keep her if you want, I don't care. Don't call me again." and hung up the phone.
She's been with me ever since.
