A: Urinary problems in both cats and dogs are commonly caused by the formation of stones. These are minerals in the urinary tract that have built up and crystalised. The stones can cause cats & dogs a lot of pain and block their urinary tract. This condition can be caused by a number of issues such as stress, incorrect diet, obesity or it could be that your cat or dog is just more prone to developing urinary stones. Cats as a species are more prone to developing stones/crystals and once this condition starts it is irreversible. It can be controlled with a specially formulated diet that is able to control the minerals deposited in the urinary tract.
Another urine problem in cats and dogs is UTI's. This is when bacteria or debris enter the urinary tract and cause a painful infection. This is usually by accident but UTI's can also be a symptom of a weak immune system. UTI's are generally treated by giving your pet antibiotics to kill the bacteria. A high moisture diet, drinking plenty of fresh water, keeping your pet clean can all help to prevent UTI's from occurring.
Urinary issues can cause the urinary tract to become blocked. If this happens it can be fatal as animals cannot survive if they can't urinate/defecate. It is important to get these urinary issues cleared up ASAP and the urinary tract flowing properly, so a visit to your vet is important as soon as you notice any symptoms. .
