Our pets are a reflection of how we treat them. (Though whatever inspired Claude to ball drop and start humping things a month early, idk bc we ain't doing anything sexy in this house lol) I fully believe that all animals should be spoken to and addressed with respect and love. My neighbor was yelling at a squirrel the other day. I cringed. These baby souls are just trying to survive in a world we are destroying around them, with no say in it. If a squirrel wants to sit on your porch, be kind to it... fuck, give the little dude a snack, make a yard friend. With my pets, I do not yell. Even when they've done something like shit in the bathtub or shred up my couch. My relationship with them is more important than the ten minutes it takes to clean up after them. Walter once had diarrhea all over a handmade $4k Tudor gown had made. The dress was washed, i never yelled, but I cried because I felt like I had failed Walter... he was sick and uncomfortable and had no way to tell me. Don't call your pets "bitches" or scream at them. Don't jokingly be negative to them, they don't understand that you're "joking". Be their safe space. You are their family and they are yours. The way people treat animals shows so much about them. So... so much. Respect their boundaries, understand their needs. They can be traumatized just like we can. They can be frightened, just like they can. They can read our energy. Be calm with them. Be kind with them. When asserting leadership, do so with respect for their bodies and their needs. If you cannot afford the time to care for them, if you cannot provide for them both emotionally and physically, if you cannot spend time with them, do not expect them to be the happiest when you grab them out of nowhere and force them to cuddle or do tricks. Don't leave them in squalor or forget to clean their litter boxes or wash their bowls or take them for proper walks. These babies need you and rely on you, and it breaks my heart when I meet people who do not understand how to treat their babies. .
Love them and they will love you...
