Downward facing dog is so good at calming the mind while simultaneously energizing the body. It is a great pose for helping with back pain, headaches, depression, or fatigue. It is the perfect pose for a cold Minnesota morning like this one (or any morning for that matter).
If I don't have time for a full practice in the morning, I'll find 2 - 3 minutes in downward dog. While I'm there I will peddle out my knees, roll my shoulders away from my ears, let my head hang heavy, and twist to each side by placing one of my hands on the exterior of my calf. I'll take big inhales and exhales with an open mouth. I'll finish with some samavritti breathing in childs pose before starting my morning routine.
