Being a pet guardian comes with so much love and so much responsibility. You try to give them everything they need.
You make decisions for them. What food you'll offer and what toys you'll buy (whatever they want usually..... And too many toys always). What vaccinations are appropriate and when to clean their teeth. Do they need dental x-rays and is it time for a nail trim?
And then one day you have to make a decision that breaks your heart. You question if it's the right time, is it the right day? When is it too early or is it too late?
You know in your heart that they trust you to make the decision at the right time and when the time comes you know they are ready to say goodbye.
With heavy hearts we said goodbye to Annie today. She hasn't eaten in days. She has been declining in health this past year at an alarming pace. And today she said she was ready. I heard her.
I honored her request, called the vet, and stayed with her to pet her in her final moment as a way of saying my goodbye.
This house will seem quiet for a while. Even with Betty and the other two cats #orkocat #cringercat there will be weird silence when we wake and step into the kitchen expecting her excited sqeaks.
