it has not been a fun weekend in the world of squirt.
saturday afternoon we came out to ride and noticed that his right hind leg was very swollen. it turned out that he had a deep puncture wound on the back of his hoof that had gotten infected and cause cellulitis in his leg. we called someone put, gave him a shot, put a clay poultice on his leg, and some topical antibiotics as well. everything seemed fine. sunday afternoon i came back to wash his leg off and re-treat it. i tried giving him some treats, which he did not take. we tried giving him his dinner, which he also did not want. so we put him in his stall where he immediately went into a corner and laid down. horses almost never lay down, and when they do, accompanied with the fact that he wouldn’t take food, it’s a sign of colic. we walked him around for about 2 hours to try to walk it out of him. he went down four more times, before we got someone out to give him another shot. today he seems much better, he hasn’t been given food today, but will be getting dinner tonight. overall he seems much happier than yesterday, and is definitely more interested in food. since the fact that he cribs (chews on the walls of his stall, fences, trees etc.) and that may have cause him to colic, he now has to wear a muzzle. but it’s all for the better, and ultimately it will help him, even if he doesn’t think so!
