Bebe, a 13-year-old medium short hair cat gets attention while in another section of the Michigan Humane Society in Westland, Norma Jean gets a visit by Jeremy Colborn, one of many employees who spend quality time with the animals.
The Michigan Humane Society has a team of behaviorists and doctors to assess behavior and temperament of dogs and cats brought in. With most rescue animals "you have no idea what their history is" and the behaviorists have to learn more about them, work with the animals so they become more adoptable and be a good fit with the right kind of home.
A proposed Michigan law would regulate animal rescues "with the goal of doing what's best for the animals." Some in the "animal welfare community said some people who claim they are running a rescue are really hoarders. Some are breeding rescued animals, then passing their offspring off as rescues. And some are bringing in animals from other states or puppy mills and adopting them out — even if they are sick or have not had medical care."
